[manga] Detroit Metal City

Genres: comedy
Plot Summary: Sōichi Negishi is a shy young man who came from the rural Ota Prefecture to Tokyo for college and wished to become a kindergarten teacher. However, for some reason he became the singer and songwriter of a metal band named “Detroit Metal City,” with a stage name “Johannes Krauser II.” Whenever he wears the heavy makeup, Negishi becomes a completely different person, shouting the most vulgar profanities beyond anyone’s imagination. With the popularity of DMC increases, Negishi starts worrying his double personalities can have negative effects on his (romantic) life off stage.
This is the funniest manga I’ve read, it’s always funny to see how one man can become the most extreme of 2 very contradicting personalities!! Especially when his good side starts to reveal his dark side, it always turn disastrous but somehow, he’d always end up able to cover up very well, yohohoho.
The good news is, DMC will get an anime and live-action movie, and the main character, Negishi, will be played by Ken’ichi Matsuyama, the guy who played L from Death Note movies and of course, L Change the World. It sure sounds like an exciting movie to me, I’d really like to see how Matusaya plays Negishi after being able to play L excellently!!

  1. Matusaya was really good as L. Such a weird n complex character to perform.. I guess this would be another one. Hmm.. Sounds like Johnny Depp of the East. Don’t you think so?

The drawing looks kiddish.. Something that a 6 year old would have been able to achieve.

  2. Actually, by manga std, yes, its quite childish and ugly, but it’s compensated well with a good dose of comedy, so it didn’t bother me much unless the comedy becomes stale or too repetitious!! So far so good, so I’m liking it!!

Johnny Depp of the East kah……I guess yeah, though my fav Japanese actor definitely goes to Abe Hiroshi, hands down. I got to know him from Dragonzakura (very, very highly recommended!!), and then Unmarried Man (kekkon dekinai ottoko), and there’s this one movie about time machine which looks like a washing machine, can’t remember the title 😛 I’m currently looking out for The Last Lawyer next, I’m so addicted to Abe Hiroshi, yohohoho.

But that said, Matsuyama is very cool when playing L, probably the only reason why Death Note movies’ worth watching. Kira meanwhile, looked like a fat, lame nerd in the movie. As for the story itself (from the manga), well, I felt it was kinda rubbish the way Kira died. Yes, he had to die in the end, but I felt it was kinda sucky after all those psychological warfare and all zzzz =.=

You can get DMC from scum-scans.com, they’re currently done with volume 4. Not sure when’s volume 5 is coming out, but can’t really expect them to scanlate that soon, but they’re very high quality scanlation, so that’s good for me 🙂
